I recently received a commission request to paint this scene from a photo taken in Acapulco. The photo provided to me showed an overcast day where the sky and water colors didn’t really impress, and the tops of the trees were cut off. I did some research and discovered it was taken from a balcony at Las Brisas Hotel. I was able to reference other photos to get a feel for how the sky played in the pool reflection and what the palm trees looked like in windy conditions. Thus I felt better able to give the painting a lively feel, as if I was on that balcony myself, looking out over the sun setting on the bay.
